Georgia Pest and Disease Watch: What to Scout For in Early Summer
Why Early July Is the Scouting Window
By the time the calendar flips to July in Cobb County, the canopy is fully leafed out and the first wave of summer pests is mid-cycle. This is the period when most insect infestations and fungal infections are still treatable — populations are detectable but not yet entrenched, and the trees themselves still have enough carbohydrate reserves to mount a defense or recover from treatment.
A month later, the calculus flips. Beetle populations that were a localized cluster in early July have laid eggs, expanded galleries, and recruited secondary invaders. Fungal cankers that could have been arrested with targeted pruning have advanced into the vascular system. The treatment window for many of the most damaging Georgia tree pests closes somewhere between mid-July and mid-August.
ISA and UGA Extension both publish scouting calendars — but the underlying principle is the same: the earlier in the season you identify a problem, the more options you have. A free walk-through with a certified arborist in early July can surface issues a homeowner wouldn't catch until the visible symptoms appear in August or September, by which point treatment is often no longer viable.
Hypoxylon Canker in Georgia Pines
Hypoxylon canker (caused by Biscogniauxia atropunctata and related species) is the single most lethal fungal disease affecting loblolly pines in the Georgia Piedmont. It attacks trees that are already stressed — drought-stressed pines, root-compromised pines, pines that have been defoliated by beetles in a prior year.
The visible signs in early July are subtle: small patches of thin, papery bark that slough off to reveal dark gray to black fungal tissue underneath. The fruiting bodies (stromata) that give the disease its name appear as dark, charcoal-like bumps beneath the bark surface. By August, infected branches show needle yellowing and dieback. By September or October, the entire crown can brown out within a few weeks.
There is no cure for Hypoxylon once a tree is infected. The arboricultural response is preventive: reduce stress factors (improve root-zone conditions, address compaction, supplement water during drought), remove trees that are already heavily infected to prevent spread to neighboring pines, and treat healthy pines with preventive fungicide injections in late winter or early spring if they are high-value specimens in close proximity to known infections.
Oak Wilt: The Window Closes This Month
Oak wilt, the vascular fungal disease caused by Ceratocystis fagacearum, remains the most destructive disease of red oaks in the eastern United States. In Georgia, the overland spread of oak wilt depends almost entirely on sap-feeding nitidulid beetles — and those beetles are most active when fresh oak sap is flowing, which is exactly the April-through-July window that pruning recommendations caution against.
For Marietta homeowners, the practical implication is this: if you pruned oaks during the prohibited April–July window without applying an ISA-approved wound dressing, your tree may already be exposed. Symptoms — leaf bronzing from the tips and margins inward, premature defoliation, and rapid tree death — show up in late summer and early fall. White oaks can sometimes hold the disease for a year or more; red oaks (including scarlet, red, pin, and shumard) typically die within weeks of showing symptoms.
If you suspect oak wilt — particularly in a red oak that's bronzing from the top down — don't wait. Call an ISA-certified arborist with oak wilt experience. Treatment with injectable fungicides is possible if caught early, and trenching to sever root grafts between infected and healthy trees can prevent the disease from spreading across a property line.
Ambrosia Beetles: The Subtle Stalker
Granulate ambrosia beetle (Xylosandrus crassiusculus) is a small but devastating pest that has become increasingly common in suburban Georgia landscapes over the past two decades. Unlike most wood-boring insects, ambrosia beetles attack apparently healthy trees — not just stressed ones — making early detection especially important.
The first sign is usually a toothpick-like protrusion of sawdust pushing out of a small entry hole in the bark — typically on the trunk or main scaffold branches, often on the lower 6 to 8 feet. Female beetles bore into the wood, inoculate the galleries with the ambrosia fungus they cultivate for food, and lay eggs. Larvae and adults feed on the fungus, not the wood directly, but the fungus clogs the vascular tissue and the tree begins declining.
Treatment is most effective when beetles are caught in the active flight phase — which in Georgia is February through May, with a smaller secondary peak in late summer. Once a tree is colonized, the prognosis depends on the extent of infestation. A few entry points on a healthy mature tree can sometimes be managed; dozens of galleries throughout the crown usually indicate that the tree is unlikely to recover.
Bagworms, Scale, and the Other July Players
Bagworms (Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis) are showing up on junipers, arborvitae, and Leyland cypress across the metro area right now. The small spindle-shaped bags hanging from branches are easy to spot if you're looking — they're often mistaken for pine cones on evergreen species that don't normally produce cones in the canopy.
Bagworm treatment timing is narrow: from early to mid-July in Georgia, when the larvae have hatched but are still small enough to be killed by a single application of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) or a labeled insecticide. By August, the bags are large and the larvae inside are protected by dense silk — treatment efficacy drops sharply. By fall, the adult females have laid eggs inside the bags that will overwinter and hatch next June.
Scale insects — particularly armored scale on hollies, oaks, and magnolias — are also at their visible peak. Look for small, immobile bumps along the underside of leaves or on stems, sometimes with a sticky residue (honeydew) on surfaces beneath the infestation. Horticultural oil applications timed to the crawler stage (mid-summer for most Georgia scales) are the standard treatment; timing is everything.
What a Professional Scouting Visit Looks Like
A July scouting visit from an ISA-certified arborist is not the same as a hazard assessment or a removal quote. The arborist walks the property, looks at each tree species individually, and checks for the species-specific signs that matter in this window: Hypoxylon papery bark on pines, ambrosia beetle toothpicks on trunks, bagworm bags on conifers, scale on hollies and oaks.
You get back a written summary of what was found, what is treatable, what is monitor-only, and what needs immediate attention. Treatment recommendations are time-stamped — "apply within 14 days" or "watch for symptoms through August" — so the timing guidance is actionable rather than generic.
If you've noticed anything unusual on your trees in the past few weeks — thinning canopy, early leaf drop, unusual bark shedding, sawdust on the trunk — now is the time to get an arborist out. The most common homeowner statement we hear in October is 'I noticed something in July but didn't think it was a big deal.' By October, treatment is rarely possible. By July, almost always.
