When Is the Right Time to Remove a Tree? Signs You Shouldn't Ignore
A Noticeable Lean and Root Plate Heave
A tree that has always had a slight lean isn't automatically a problem — but a lean that has gotten worse over months, or one paired with soil heaving at the base, is a red flag that demands immediate attention. Root plate heave happens when a tree's root system starts to tip, lifting the soil on the uphill side into a visible mound or ridge.
According to ISA guidelines, a lean greater than 15 degrees from vertical combined with root movement is considered a high-hazard condition. At that point, the question isn't whether the tree will fall — it's when and where. Emergency removal before a storm event is always cheaper and safer than cleanup after a failure.
If you see cracking in the soil near the base of a leaning tree, call an arborist the same day. That cracking means the root plate is already in motion, and a storm or even a saturated soil event from heavy rain can be enough to bring the tree down.
Dead Crown Dieback: How Much Is Too Much?
Some dead branches are normal, especially in the lower crown where light doesn't reach. But when dieback spreads to the upper crown — the "leader" and main scaffold branches — that's a sign the tree is in serious decline.
ISA-certified arborists use a rough threshold: when more than 25–30% of the crown is dead or dying, the tree has likely passed the point where treatment or preservation is cost-effective. At 50% crown loss, removal is almost always the right call. The dead wood itself also creates a hazard — dry, brittle branches can fall without warning even in calm weather.
Watch for branches that fail to leaf out in spring while the surrounding canopy does. Bark that sloughs off in large sections, exposed bare wood, and fungal conks (shelf mushrooms) growing at branch attachment points are all signs of advancing decay in the crown.
Co-Dominant Stems and Included Bark
Co-dominant stems are two or more main trunks of roughly equal size growing from the same point — common in ornamental trees and hardwoods that weren't properly pruned young. The real danger is what's hidden inside: included bark.
When two stems grow tightly together at a narrow V-angle, bark from each stem gets compressed between them instead of forming solid wood. This creates a built-in weakness — the attachment can split under wind load or ice, often with no warning. ISA research shows that included bark unions are among the most common causes of sudden, catastrophic stem failure.
Dynamic cabling can extend the life of a tree with co-dominant stems if the attachment is still structurally sound and the tree is otherwise healthy. But when the union is already cracked, decayed inside, or moving, cabling only delays the inevitable. An arborist assessment is the only way to know which side of that line you're on.
The Hazard Radius: Proximity-to-Structure Math
A simple rule arborists use: a tree's potential fall radius is roughly 1.5 times its height. A 60-foot loblolly pine can reach 90 feet in any direction when it falls. If your home, a neighbor's home, a vehicle, or a power line is within that radius, the risk calculus changes.
This doesn't mean every tall tree near a house needs to come down. Trees that are structurally sound, properly pruned, and free of decay can stand for decades without incident. But when you combine proximity to a structure with any of the other warning signs in this article — lean, dieback, root damage — the hazard multiplies.
Georgia homeowners should also factor in the specific failure modes of common local species. Loblolly pine root rot (often caused by Heterobasidion annosum) can cause whole-tree failures with almost no above-ground symptoms. A certified arborist can probe the root collar and base for early signs of decay that a homeowner would never spot.
Soil Heaving and Ground-Level Symptoms
Most people look up when they assess a tree's health. Look down instead. The ground around the base tells as much of the story as the crown does.
Mushrooms fruiting from the root zone or at the base of the trunk indicate root decay — specifically Armillaria (honey fungus) or Inonotus species that break down root wood from the inside. Soil that feels soft and spongy underfoot around a mature tree, especially after a dry spell, can indicate a hollow root system.
Visible surface roots that have cracked or split, or that show fungal growth along their length, are another ground-level warning. In Georgia's clay soils, compaction from construction, heavy equipment, or even long-term vehicle parking over root zones can kill feeder roots and weaken structural anchor roots over a period of years.
